Air India Announces Significant Compensation for Crash Victims’ Families

Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, the Tata Group has announced a compensation package for the victims’ families. Each family of the deceased will receive ₹1 crore (approximately £86,000). Additionally, the group will cover medical expenses for the injured and assist in rebuilding the BJ Medical College hostel affected by the crash .

The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, resulting in the loss of all 242 individuals on board, including 232 passengers and 10 crew members. The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport .

The compensation aligns with India’s commitment to the Montreal Convention, which mandates airlines to provide compensation for passenger injuries or deaths, irrespective of fault. Under the convention, the minimum compensation is 128,821 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) per passenger, approximately ₹1.4 crore (around £120,000) .

In response to the tragedy, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow and emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the affected families during this difficult time.
