Greta Thunberg Among Activists Detained as Israel Halts Gaza-Bound Aid ship
On June 9, 2025, Israeli forces intercepted the Madleen, a Gaza-bound aid vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The ship was carrying 12 activists, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and French Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan. The activists aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and protest Israel’s ongoing blockade of the region. The interception occurred approximately 200 kilometers from Gaza in international waters .
Israeli authorities confirmed the operation, stating that the vessel was directed away from a restricted area and towed to Israeli shores. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the mission as a “public relations stunt,” asserting that the aid on board was minimal and emphasizing ongoing government-led humanitarian deliveries into Gaza.
In contrast, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition condemned the interception as an unlawful act, describing it as a “kidnapping” in international waters. They claimed that the ship was carrying life-saving supplies, including baby formula, medical goods, and other essentials, which were confiscated during the operation.
The incident has sparked international debate over the methods of delivering aid to Gaza and the enforcement of the blockade. Critics argue that such actions exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region, while supporters contend that they are necessary to prevent the smuggling of weapons. The activists, including Thunberg and Hassan, are currently set for deportation through Ashdod and Ramle .
