“No Police Officer in Nigeria Should Earn Less Than ₦500,000 Monthly” – Sowore Declares Boldly
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has issued a powerful call to action: every police officer in Nigeria — whether serving, retired, or deceased — deserves a minimum monthly salary of ₦500,000. This declaration came during a high-tension protest held on July 21, 2025, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
💸 “Why Should Senators Earn ₦30 Million While Police Earn ₦57K?”
Sowore blasted the massive wage inequality between Nigerian lawmakers and frontline officers. He questioned why senators earn over ₦30 million monthly, yet the officers who protect them survive on a meagre ₦50,000 to ₦60,000 salary.
“How can a senator, who isn’t risking his life daily, earn that much while the policeman standing in the rain and under the sun is starving?”
👮♂️ Beyond Salaries: Pensions, Insurance & Human Dignity
During the #PoliceProtest, Sowore demanded not just salary reviews, but:
Comprehensive pension reforms for retired officers
Life insurance for families of fallen officers
End to exploitation under the current Contributory Pension Scheme
He stressed that the government must stop treating officers like disposable tools and start seeing them as human beings worthy of dignity.
🤝 Allies Join In: Adeyanju & Retired Officers Add Their Voices
Other activists, like Deji Adeyanju and retired police officers, marched alongside Sowore, voicing frustration over poor welfare, delayed gratuities, and what they called the “inhumane treatment” of retired officers.
They called on President Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to implement urgent reforms.
🗣️ Final Word: “They Deserve Better”
Sowore concluded by saying:
“We must pay our police officers well if we want a better society. No man should risk his life for ₦57,000 a month.”
