Major Chelsea Transfer Confirmed: €65m Star to Join After Club World Cup.

Chelsea Football Club have agreed a €65 million (£54.6m) deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign 20-year-old winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, marking their second major acquisition of the summer transfer window, according to German outlet BILD. The England youth international, who will remain with Dortmund for the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, is set to join the Blues after the tournament concludes in mid-July, with a medical scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025.

The deal, which follows Chelsea’s £30m signing of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, includes add-ons tied to achievable targets like games played, with more challenging bonuses linked to winning the UEFA Champions League. Gittens, who has agreed a seven-year contract until June 2032, is seen as a key addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad, particularly after the departure of Jadon Sancho and with Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix expected to leave this summer. The versatile winger, capable of playing on either flank, scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 49 appearances for Dortmund last season, including four goals in the Champions League.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Gittens, a top target to bolster their wide areas, intensified after a £42m bid was rejected earlier this month. The €65m agreement reflects Dortmund’s valuation, though the German club initially hoped for more competition to drive up the price. Gittens’ limited starts under Dortmund’s new manager Niko Kovac in the second half of the 2024-25 season facilitated negotiations, despite his standout performances earlier in the campaign. Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, led by sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, continues to focus on young, high-potential talents to complement Maresca’s system.

The Blues, currently competing in the Club World Cup, finished second in Group D after a 3-1 loss to Flamengo, despite wins against Los Angeles FC and ES Tunis. They face Benfica in the round of 16 on Saturday, June 28, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Gittens’ inability to join before the tournament’s registration deadline means he will feature for Dortmund in the competition, but Chelsea could register him for the knockout stages if they advance and a club-to-club agreement is finalized mid-tournament.

Chelsea’s transfer activity remains robust, with the club also eyeing a versatile forward, having been linked with Brighton’s Joao Pedro (£60m) and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, whose release clause stands at £85m. The Blues are also in the market for a centre-back to strengthen their defense ahead of a demanding season that includes at least eight Champions League matches, 38 Premier League fixtures, and domestic cup competitions. The club’s financial position is supported by expected earnings of £40m to £97m from the Club World Cup, easing concerns over Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Maresca, speaking ahead of the Benfica match, expressed confidence in his squad but acknowledged the transfer window’s unpredictability: “We’re focused on the Club World Cup, but when the window is open, anything can happen.” Fans have taken to social media, with posts on X celebrating the Gittens deal as a “statement signing” for Chelsea’s youth-led project, though some urged caution until the transfer is officially confirmed.

The addition of Gittens, alongside Delap and the anticipated arrival of Palmeiras’ Estevao Willian post-tournament, signals Chelsea’s intent to build a dynamic, future-proof squad under Maresca’s leadership as they aim to reclaim domestic and European glory.
