Nigerian Government Rejects US Security Alert, Insists Abuja is Secure

The Nigerian government has firmly dismissed recent security concerns raised by the United States, which had issued an advisory warning its citizens about possible threats in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement released Monday, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation described the US advisory as “unfounded and misleading,” asserting that there is no credible intelligence indicating any imminent threat to public safety in Abuja or its environs.

“The government of Nigeria remains vigilant and committed to the safety of all residents, citizens and visitors,” the statement read. “Security agencies are fully alert and have not recorded any intelligence suggesting an elevated threat level in the FCT.”

The US Embassy in Abuja had earlier in the week updated its travel advisory, citing “an increased risk of terrorist attacks,” and advised American citizens to avoid crowded areas and remain cautious. The warning stirred public concern and sparked debates on social media platforms.

In response, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, reassured the public that all security agencies were working cohesively to maintain peace and order across the country.

“There is no cause for panic. Our security architecture remains robust and effective,” Ribadu told journalists in Abuja. “We are in constant communication with our international partners, including the United States, and will not hesitate to act on any credible intelligence.”

Analysts believe such advisories, while routine for many foreign missions, can have significant economic and diplomatic implications if not properly addressed. Tourism stakeholders and business groups have called for calm, urging the international community to rely on verified data and collaborate with Nigerian authorities.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy has not withdrawn its advisory but reiterated that it was issued as part of its standard procedures to ensure the safety of American citizens abroad.
