US Defense Tech for Pakistan: Trump Seeks Full Military Backing Against Iran
Recent reports indicate that the United States, specifically under the Trump administration, has offered Pakistan “unprecedented access to American defense technologies, including fifth-generation stealth jets and sophisticated missile systems,” in exchange for “unconditional military and strategic support against Iran.” This offer reportedly came during a White House luncheon between President Trump and Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir.
This move is seen as a significant policy shift, aiming to counter Pakistan’s growing military ties with China and leverage Pakistan’s regional knowledge and strategic location in the escalating tensions with Iran. The proposed package also includes substantial financial aid and new trade and security agreements.
However, Pakistan’s position on the Iran-Israel conflict and its relationship with the U.S. is complex. While reports suggest that Trump has asked Pakistan to side with the U.S., Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that Islamabad has not engaged in any new military cooperation with Tehran since Israel launched attacks on Iran. He also emphasized that regular security cooperation with Iran along their shared border continues to combat militant groups, but no fresh operational coordination has been initiated in response to the recent escalation.
Analysts suggest that Pakistan’s proximity and ties to Tehran position it as a potential mediator rather than a direct military ally against Iran. Pakistan has a significant Shia minority and shares a border with Iran, making regional stability a key concern. Islamabad has publicly defended Iran’s right to self-defense and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Historically, the US-Pakistan relationship has been largely transactional, particularly in the security sphere, with aid and investment often tied to Pakistan’s alignment with US strategic goals. The current overture highlights the US’s desire for Pakistan’s support in a highly volatile region, but it remains to be seen how Pakistan will ultimately navigate these complex geopolitical pressures.
