Cold Case Solved: 92-Year-Old Charged After 60-Year DNA Match, Jury Hears

92-Year-Old Charged in Cold Case After DNA Breakthrough, Jury Told

A 92-year-old man, Ryland Headley, has been charged with the 1967 rape and murder of 75-year-old Louisa Dunne in Bristol, UK. The case remained unsolved for decades until recent advancements in DNA technology led to a breakthrough.

Case Background

In June 1967, Louisa Dunne was found dead in her home in Easton, Bristol. Despite an extensive investigation involving thousands of fingerprint samples, the perpetrator was not identified at the time. Forensic DNA analysis was not available then, so evidence was preserved for future examination.

Breakthrough in 2023

In 2023, Avon and Somerset Police reopened the case and sent five items from the original investigation, including Dunne’s blue skirt, for forensic analysis. The analysis revealed a high density of semen on the skirt. DNA testing matched the sample to Ryland Headley with overwhelming statistical certainty, a match described as “billion to one” .

Additional Evidence

Further investigation revealed that Headley’s palm print, previously collected during the initial investigation, matched one found at the crime scene. At the time of Dunne’s death, Headley lived near her but outside the area where police had collected palm prints. He later moved to Suffolk, where in 1977 he was convicted of raping two elderly women and admitted to additional burglaries .

Legal Proceedings

Headley denies the charges of rape and murder. The trial is ongoing at Bristol Crown Court, with a jury of eight men and four women hearing the case. Prosecutor Anna Vigars KC emphasized the gravity of the case, regardless of the decades that have elapsed .

This case highlights the significant role that advancements in forensic science, particularly DNA analysis, play in solving cold cases and ensuring justice, even many years after the crime was committed.
