Nigeria’s Super Falcons Crowned WAFCON 2024 Champions After Beating Morocco

The Super Falcons struck early, with Okoronkwo heading in a pinpoint cross from Toni Payne in the 18th minute, silencing the 21,000-strong Moroccan crowd. Oshoala, introduced as a second-half substitute, doubled the lead in the 67th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Morocco’s Yasmin Mrabet to slot past goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi. Nnadozie’s heroics, including a diving save to deny Ibtissam Jraidi in the 83rd minute, preserved Nigeria’s clean sheet, their fourth of the tournament. Morocco, despite a spirited performance, struggled to breach Nigeria’s defense, with their attack faltering after an early injury to Ghizlane Chebbak.

Coach Justin Madugu praised his team’s resilience, stating, “This victory is for every Nigerian. The girls showed heart and class.” Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, named Player of the Tournament, dedicated the win to fans, saying, “We carried Nigeria’s hopes on our shoulders.” The Falcons’ unbeaten run, highlighted by a 5-0 quarter-final rout of Zambia and a dramatic 2-1 semi-final win over South Africa, showcased their attacking flair and defensive solidity, with Okoronkwo’s five assists and three goals earning her the Golden Boot.

Social media exploded with celebrations, with @NGSuper_Falcons tweeting, “CHAMPIONS!!! Super Falcons win WAFCON 2024! 2-0 vs Morocco! 🦅 #MissionXComplete,” and @AdemolaVictorTv posting, “Oshoala and Okoronkwo deliver Nigeria’s 10th title!” President Bola Tinubu, watching at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, hailed the team on X, while @SouleFacts noted, “Nigeria’s women have made history again!” Morocco’s coach Jorge Vilda conceded defeat graciously, saying, “Nigeria were the better side tonight.”

The victory earns Nigeria a $1 million prize, part of CAF’s boosted $3.475 million purse, and secures their spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. South Africa claimed third place, defeating Ghana 3-1 earlier Saturday. The win avenges Nigeria’s 2022 semi-final loss to Morocco, signaling their return to continental supremacy.
