Trump Announces Efforts to Broker Peace Between Thailand and Cambodia

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, July 26, 2025, that he is actively working to broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia as their border conflict, now in its third day, has claimed at least 33 lives and displaced over 168,000 people. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump revealed he spoke with Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, urging both leaders to halt the violence that erupted after a landmine explosion wounded five Thai soldiers on Thursday.

“Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand. I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging,” Trump posted while on a golfing trip in Scotland. He later added, “I have just spoken to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, and it was a very good conversation. Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE.” Trump emphasized that the U.S. would pause ongoing trade negotiations with both nations, stating, “We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!”

The conflict, centered around disputed border areas near ancient temple sites like Preah Vihear, has seen artillery, rocket attacks, and allegations of cluster munitions use, condemned by Human Rights Watch. Tensions, which flared after a Cambodian soldier’s death in May, have spread to coastal regions along the Gulf of Thailand, 250 kilometers southwest of the main frontlines. The UN Security Council and ASEAN, led by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, have called for de-escalation, with Cambodia backing Anwar’s ceasefire proposal and Thailand agreeing in principle.

Social media reactions on X praised Trump’s diplomatic efforts, with @MarioNawfal noting, “Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE,” and @BuzzPatriot calling it a “live play-by-play of his peacemaking mastery.” Others, like @anmol_kaundilya, highlighted Trump’s comparison to the India-Pakistan ceasefire he claims to have facilitated in May 2025. However, some skepticism persists, with @Conscious_Factz questioning the feasibility of a swift resolution.

Trump’s intervention leverages U.S. trade influence, with both nations facing potential 36% reciprocal tariffs if the conflict persists past August 1. The president expressed optimism, stating, “After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see!” As fighting continues, with reports of Thai airstrikes and Cambodian evacuations, the international community watches closely for a breakthrough.
