PM Modi to PM Modi to Surpass Indira Gandhi as India’s Second Longest-Serving Prime Minister Today Indira Gandhi as India’s Second Longest-Serving Prime Minister Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic milestone today, surpassing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to become India’s second longest-serving prime minister in consecutive terms. As of July 25, 2025, Modi has completed 4,078 uninterrupted days in office since taking oath on May 26, 2014, edging past Gandhi’s record of 4,077 consecutive days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. This places him behind only Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, who served an unbroken term of 6,130 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964.

Modi, 74, the first prime minister born after India’s independence in 1947, also holds distinctions as the longest-serving non-Congress prime minister and the longest-serving leader from a non-Hindi-speaking state. His political journey, marked by six consecutive election victories—three as Gujarat’s chief minister (2002, 2007, 2012) and three as prime minister (2014, 2019, 2024)—matches Nehru’s record of leading a party to three straight Lok Sabha wins. Modi’s tenure, inspired by the motto Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas (Together with All, Development for All, Trust of All), has focused on inclusive governance, economic reforms, and elevating India’s global stature.

The milestone comes amid Modi’s ongoing visits to the United Kingdom and the Maldives, where he has been engaging in high-level talks to strengthen bilateral ties. Social media erupted with reactions, with @htTweets posting, “PM Narendra Modi becomes India’s second-longest serving premier in consecutive terms, completing 4,078 straight days in office,” and @SoodSaab11 noting, “Zero breaks. Relentless vision. He’s changed Indian politics forever.” Critics, like @CheKrishnaCk_, credited allies Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu for his 2024 coalition victory, while @madhviojhaa contrasted Modi’s humble origins with Gandhi’s privileged background.

Modi’s leadership has seen transformative policies, including the abrogation of Article 370, the abolition of Triple Talaq, and the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. His government’s PM Awas Yojana has sanctioned over 4.2 crore houses since 2014, with 3 crore more approved in June 2024. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme has supported farmers, while international agencies note India’s record pace in reducing multidimensional poverty, with 25 crore people lifted out in nine years, per NITI Aayog.

However, Modi’s tenure remains polarizing, with critics citing democratic backsliding and his handling of the 2002 Gujarat riots as points of contention. Supporters counter that his decisive leadership, from the Balakot strikes to Operation Sindoor, has redefined India as a muscular global power.
