Buhari, Nigeria’s Former President, Dies in London Hospital

The news of Buhari’s passing has sent ripples across Nigeria, prompting an outpouring of tributes and condolences from political leaders, citizens, and international figures. President Bola Tinubu announced a national mourning period, with flags to be flown at half-staff for seven days. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been tasked with overseeing the repatriation of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Buhari’s presidency was marked by efforts to combat corruption, improve security, and stabilize Nigeria’s economy, though his tenure faced criticism over economic challenges and human rights concerns. His earlier military rule was noted for its “War Against Indiscipline” campaign, aimed at promoting civic responsibility.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian military before entering politics. His legacy remains a subject of debate, with supporters lauding his integrity and detractors pointing to governance challenges during his time in office.

The Nigerian government has urged citizens to remain calm and honor Buhari’s memory through peaceful reflection. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
