Thousands Gather to Mourn the Liverpool and Portugal Star Alongside His Brother André

Wake Ceremony – July 4, 2025

The farewell began on Friday, July 4, with a public wake at the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme in Gondomar, Portugal.

A private moment was first held for family and close friends.

Later, the chapel doors were opened to the public, allowing thousands of grieving fans, neighbors, and well-wishers to file past the coffin.

Liverpool FC officials, former coaches, and local dignitaries were seen consoling the family.


⛪ Funeral Mass & Burial – July 5, 2025

On Saturday morning, July 5, the funeral mass took place at 10:00 a.m. at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar (São Cosme Church).

Both Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André, who died in the same tragic incident, were honored together during the service.

The atmosphere was solemn, with many attendees moved to tears.

The streets were lined with supporters waving Portuguese and Liverpool flags.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa paid his respects personally.

Liverpool FC’s Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Jordan Henderson were present, as was CEO Billy Hogan.

🕊️ Final Resting Place

After the mass, a procession led mourners to the municipal cemetery in Gondomar, where the brothers were buried side by side.

As the coffins were lowered, chants of “Jota! Jota!” echoed through the crowd—a final tribute to a beloved son of Portugal.
