Lawmakers dump PDP and YPP for ruling party in shock move
Seven members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party.
The lawmakers were originally elected on the platforms of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
Their defection was formally announced on Thursday, through separate letters submitted to the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.
This shift is expected to have significant political implications ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in Akwa Ibom, which has traditionally leaned PDP.
