At the 2025 G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, leaders from the world’s major advanced economies issued a joint statement condemning Iran as a principal source of instability in the Middle East. The declaration came amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, which began with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran on Friday, claimed by Israel to be preemptive actions to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The confrontation has resulted in more than 220 civilian deaths in Iran and 24 in Israel.

Iran Declared 'Principal Source of Instability' in Middle East by G7 Leaders

The G7 affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense and reiterated that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. Although Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Israel, not a signatory, is widely believed to possess nuclear arms. The U.S., while denying direct involvement, expressed prior knowledge and tacit support of Israel’s actions. President Trump, citing the escalating crisis, left the G7 summit early and urged evacuation from Tehran. The G7 called for broad de-escalation in the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza, and pledged to safeguard energy market stability. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged counterparts from the UK, France, and the EU to discuss the crisis, as the U.S. continues to seek a nuclear deal with Iran.

The G7’s statement underscores the international community’s growing concern over Iran’s regional activities and its nuclear ambitions. The call for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement reflects a collective effort to address the complex dynamics of the Middle East.
