In the wake of the devastating Benue massacre, where over 150 lives were lost in Yelewata community, Enugu State is grappling with its own security crisis. Residents of Eboh Community in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, are fleeing their homes following a brutal attack by armed herdsmen in neighboring Ebonyi State. The assailants reportedly killed at least 16 people and destroyed 25 houses in Nkalaha village. Although no casualties have been reported in Eboh, the community is on high alert, with many women and children seeking refuge elsewhere. Local security forces have been engaged in gunfire exchanges with the herdsmen, though no fatalities have been confirmed .
This escalation follows a series of attacks in Enugu State, where suspected herdsmen have killed at least 13 people and displaced residents from Agu-Amede, Mgbuji, and Eboh communities. The assailants have also set homes ablaze, prompting widespread fear and condemnation from local leaders .
The Enugu State government has faced criticism for its response to these attacks. In March 2025, security forces reportedly clashed with women protesting against the killings in Eha-Amufu, leading to injuries among the demonstrators .
The recent violence underscores the ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in Nigeria, exacerbated by issues such as land disputes and inadequate security measures. The Enugu State government and federal authorities are under increasing pressure to address the escalating insecurity and provide protection to affected communities.
