Tinubu Mocks PDP, LP on Democracy Day: “Pleasure to See You in Disarray”
On June 12, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a significant address to a joint session of Nigeria’s National Assembly, commemorating the nation’s Democracy Day and marking 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of democracy, acknowledging its complexities while affirming it as the best form of governance. He also paid tribute to key figures in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, including Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and Pa Alfred Rewane.
In a pointed remark, President Tinubu addressed the opposition parties, stating, “I’ll not help you put your house in order.” This comment was a direct response to ongoing criticisms from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) regarding his administration’s policies. The PDP had previously accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining democratic principles and inflicting hardship on Nigerians . Similarly, the LP had called on the president to make public offices less attractive to promote genuine service to the people .
In his address, President Tinubu also reassured Nigerians of his commitment to addressing economic challenges. He announced that an executive bill proposing a new national minimum wage was being prepared and would soon be forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration .
The president’s statements have sparked reactions across the political spectrum. The PDP and LP have continued to voice concerns over the administration’s policies, while the APC has defended the government’s reforms as necessary for the country’s progress .
