A British national, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, has been confirmed as the sole survivor of the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 in Ahmedabad, India. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025, killing over 290 people, including 242 passengers and crew members, and several individuals on the ground. The aircraft struck a doctors’ hostel in the Meghani Nagar area, causing significant casualties .

Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national, was seated near an emergency exit and reportedly survived by jumping from the burning wreckage. He was found limping through the debris and was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. Doctors describe his condition as critical, and he remains under intensive care .

Initial reports had indicated that there were no survivors, but Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik later confirmed that Ramesh was alive and receiving treatment in a hospital.

The crash has drawn international attention, with leaders from India, the United Kingdom, and other nations expressing condolences. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash, with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch .
