Israel Deports Greta Thunberg After Intercepting Gaza-Bound Flotilla
Greta Thunberg, the climate activist, has been deported from Israel after the Gaza-bound aid ship she was on, named the “Madleen,” was intercepted and seized by Israeli forces.
The “Madleen,” which was carrying humanitarian aid, including baby formula and food, was part of a “Freedom Flotilla” organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The activists aimed to defy Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and highlight the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
The vessel was intercepted in international waters by the Israeli navy. Israeli officials stated that the ship was a “media provocation” and a “selfie yacht” carrying a “meager” amount of aid. They maintained their right to enforce the naval blockade of Gaza.
Upon the ship’s arrival at the Israeli port of Ashdod, Greta Thunberg and other activists were detained. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Thunberg agreed to be deported and departed Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning, flying to Sweden via France. Other activists on board had differing stances, with some also agreeing to deportation and others refusing, leading to further judicial proceedings.
