"He Smiled": Hainault Murder Accused Slashed Man's Neck, Court Hears

Hainault Murder Accused ‘Smiled’ After Slashing

Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, is currently on trial at the Old Bailey for a violent rampage in Hainault, East London, on April 30, 2024. During the attack, Monzo allegedly ran over security guard Donato Iwule with a van before stabbing him in the neck with a Japanese sword. Iwule testified that Monzo smiled during the assault and showed no remorse, leading Iwule to believe he was dying. Iwule managed to escape and warn a nearby schoolboy, Daniel Anjorin, who was subsequently fatally attacked by Monzo.

Monzo faces multiple charges, including one count of murder, four counts of attempted murder, one count of wounding with intent, one count of aggravated burglary, and three counts of possession of a bladed article. He has admitted to possessing a katana and a tanto sword but denies the other charges. Prosecutors argue that Monzo’s actions were intentional and indiscriminate, while the defense suggests a pre-existing mental vulnerability.

The trial is ongoing, and further details are expected as the case progresses.
