Maryam Abacha Questions Disappearance of Nigeria’s Funds After Abacha’s Death
Maryam Abacha, widow of Nigeria’s former military ruler General Sani Abacha, has consistently defended her late husband’s legacy, particularly regarding the allegations of embezzlement of state funds. In interviews marking the 22nd anniversary of his death in June 2020, she expressed strong disapproval of the claims that he looted billions of dollars.
Maryam questioned why her husband was not labeled a thief during his lifetime, suggesting that the allegations surfaced only after his death. She emphasized that it is shameful to accuse a deceased leader of wrongdoing, asserting that the truth about the recovered funds would eventually come to light. She also accused the people of Kano, where her husband hailed from, of betraying him despite his contributions to the state and country.
The Nigerian government has recovered over $3.6 billion linked to the Abacha regime from countries such as Switzerland, the United States, and the Bailiwick of Jersey. These funds were allegedly stashed abroad during his tenure. Supporters of the late general, including his former Chief Security Officer Hamza Al-Mustapha, have contended that the money was kept overseas to protect Nigeria from potential sanctions and to prevent suffering among Nigerians.
Despite the controversies, Maryam Abacha has remained active in public life, advocating for forgiveness and unity. In April 2022, she announced that she had forgiven all those who had offended her family, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
While the debate over the Abacha loot continues, Maryam Abacha’s steadfast defense of her husband’s actions and her calls for forgiveness highlight the complex and enduring legacy of General Sani Abacha’s rule in Nigeria.
