Israel Vows to Stop Greta Thunberg’s Gaza Aid Ship
Israel has vowed to prevent the British-flagged aid boat Madleen, carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and 11 other activists, from reaching the Gaza Strip. The vessel, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, departed from Sicily on June 1, 2025, aiming to deliver symbolic humanitarian aid and raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The cargo includes baby formula, rice, medical supplies, and other essentials .
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to take “all necessary measures” to stop the boat from reaching Gaza, reinforcing the country’s naval blockade. Katz labeled the flotilla as a “Hamas propaganda” effort and warned the activists to turn back, stating, “You will not make it to Gaza” .
The blockade, imposed since 2007, has been a point of contention, with Israel citing security concerns and the prevention of weapon transfers to Hamas. In contrast, critics argue that the blockade exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with reports of severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies .
The Madleen is currently near the Egyptian coast, en route to Gaza. Activists aboard the vessel have reported possible communication jamming, raising concerns about the potential interception of the ship by Israeli forces . This situation recalls the 2010 Gaza flotilla incident, where Israeli commandos boarded a similar aid ship, resulting in the deaths of 10 activists.
The flotilla’s mission underscores the ongoing international debate over Gaza’s blockade and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While Israel maintains that its actions are necessary for security, many international observers and human rights organizations continue to call for an end to the blockade and greater access for humanitarian aid.
