Murder Charges Laid After Four-Year-Old Boy Dies in Car Crash

Two men have been charged with murder following a tragic crash in Dartford, Kent, that resulted in the death of four-year-old Peter Maughan. The incident occurred on June 1, 2025, when two grey Ford Ranger pickup trucks collided on New Barn Road around 9:30 p.m. Peter, affectionately known as “Peter Rabbit,” was a passenger in one of the vehicles and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. His 24-year-old father remains in critical condition, while his one-year-old sister sustained minor injuries. The family was traveling together in the same vehicle at the time of the crash.

The two men charged are Patrick Maughan, aged 53, from Swanley, and Owen Maughan, aged 27, from Darenth. They have been charged with murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, and attempted wounding concerning the injured family members. Both are scheduled to appear in Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on June 4, 2025.
