Casualties Mount as Israeli Forces Fire on Gaza Aid Distribution Point
On May 27, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Rafah, Gaza, during the launch of a new aid distribution initiative by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S.- and Israeli-backed organization. Thousands of desperate civilians gathered at a newly established aid hub, leading to chaos. Israeli forces opened fire on the crowd, resulting in at least three deaths and over 48 injuries. The GHF’s executive director resigned, citing the inability to meet impartial humanitarian standards.
The GHF’s approach, which differs from traditional aid methods by requiring people to travel to centralized food points, has been criticized for being impractical and potentially harmful. Critics argue that the initiative may be more about optics and controlling narratives than addressing the urgent hunger crisis. The United Nations has condemned the plan, stating that it fails to uphold humanitarian principles.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence against civilians seeking aid in Gaza. In February 2024, Israeli forces opened fire on crowds waiting for food aid, resulting in at least 118 deaths and over 700 injuries. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have condemned these actions as violations of international law.
The international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of effective, impartial humanitarian aid channels to address the dire needs of the Palestinian population in Gaza.
