Saudi Arabia Deports Sheikh Gumi Ahead of Hajj 2025

Controversial Deportation: Sheikh Gumi Barred from Hajj 2025 by Saudi Arabia

On May 25, 2025, Saudi Arabian authorities deported prominent Nigerian Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, effectively barring him from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. Despite holding a valid visa and being part of an official Nigerian delegation sponsored by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Gumi was denied entry into Medina upon arrival and was subsequently returned to Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi attributed the deportation to his political views, stating, “Due to some reasons related to my views on world politics, the authorities in Saudi Arabia do not want me to be present at Hajj even though they have granted me a visa.” He expressed gratitude to Nigerian authorities for pledging to engage with their Saudi counterparts to address the issue.

The Saudi government has not publicly provided specific reasons for the deportation. However, observers suggest that Gumi’s outspoken positions on national and international affairs, including his advocacy for dialogue with armed groups in Nigeria and his criticism of certain foreign policies, may have influenced the decision.

Upon his return to Nigeria, Sheikh Gumi resumed his regular teaching and preaching activities. He also indicated plans to focus on personal matters, including his health and farming activities, while continuing to pray for the safe return of all pilgrims and the prosperity of the nation.
