Boko Haram brutal attack on the villages of Mallam Karamti and Kwatandashi in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria
On May 15, 2025, militants from the Boko Haram-linked Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) faction carried out a brutal attack on the villages of Mallam Karamti and Kwatandashi in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. The assault resulted in the deaths of at least 57 individuals and left over 70 people missing, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region this year.
According to eyewitnesses, the militants accused the villagers of collaborating with the rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). They gathered more than 100 residents and marched them into the bush, where many were executed—some by gunfire, others by having their throats slit. The bodies of 57 victims were recovered, but fears remain that more may be found as search efforts continue.
This massacre occurred during a week of escalating violence in Borno State. Earlier, ISWAP militants overran a Nigerian military base in Marte, killing several soldiers and seizing weapons. Additionally, a roadside bomb detonated along the Maiduguri-Damboa road, killing at least four people and injuring more than ten others.
The Nigerian military and government have yet to confirm the casualty figures from these attacks. The resurgence of such violence underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and its factions, despite ongoing military efforts to combat insurgency in the region.
