Trump Plans Call with Putin to End Ukraine War
On May 19, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump initiated a significant diplomatic effort to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. He held separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aiming to establish a ceasefire and pave the way for a lasting peace agreement. OgaaNews
In his discussions with Putin, Trump emphasized the urgency of halting the conflict, referring to it as a “bloodbath.” He proposed a 30-day ceasefire, focusing initially on energy and infrastructure targets, with the hope of expanding the pause to include broader military operations. Putin agreed to the limited ceasefire but stipulated that any long-term resolution would require a halt to intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine from its allies.
Concurrently, Trump coordinated with NATO and European leaders to support the ceasefire proposal. However, some critics, including former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, have expressed concerns over the perceived pressure on Ukraine and the potential sidelining of Kyiv in the peace process.
The diplomatic push also involved meetings in Rome, where Vice President JD Vance met with President Zelenskyy and other European leaders. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to a full and unconditional ceasefire, while also emphasizing the need for continued international support.
