“To Easy LoL”: Ten Inmates’ Bold Escape from New Orleans Lockup
Ten inmates, including individuals convicted of murder, escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans early Friday morning. The escape occurred during a period when the only assigned guard had temporarily left the area to get food, suggesting a significant lapse in security. Authorities suspect possible insider assistance from within the sheriff’s department. Messages were found scribbled above the hole, including one that read “To Easy LoL,” drawing attention to the ease of the escape and underlying concerns about the jail’s security protocols.
The escapees managed to remove a toilet, breach a wall, navigate a hallway, and exit through a maintenance door before scaling a wall and being seen crossing an interstate in orange jumpsuits. They left taunting messages behind, such as “Too Easy LOL” and “Catch us when you can.” As of Friday afternoon, only one inmate had been recaptured. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and city officials expressed outrage and called for a thorough investigation, citing possible malfeasance. Sheriff Susan Hutson noted the jail was only 60% staffed at the time. Victims of the escapees’ crimes have expressed fear for their safety, with some even leaving New Orleans. The breach has sparked serious concerns over jail security and oversight.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from local and state officials for the delayed public notification and security lapses. Law enforcement is collaborating with federal agencies and using surveillance to track the remaining escapees, while also working to protect potential trial witnesses. The jail, under federal monitoring since 2013 due to previous rights violations, remains plagued by systemic security and staffing issues. Three staff members have been suspended amid the investigation.
