Project Waterworth: Enhancing Digital Infrastructure
Meta has unveiled Project Waterworth, an ambitious initiative to construct a 50,000-kilometer undersea cable system connecting the United States, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions.
This project aims to bolster internet connectivity and support Meta’s AI developments, with a significant focus on enhancing India’s digital infrastructure. The subsea cable, expected to be operational by the end of the decade, will facilitate faster internet speeds and improved digital inclusion in the region.
Expansion of Engineering Talent in Bengaluru
In addition to infrastructure investments, Meta is expanding its engineering workforce in India, particularly in Bengaluru. The company is currently recruiting for 41 positions, primarily focusing on software and machine learning engineers.
This hiring surge is part of Meta’s strategy to utilize India as an engineering hub, with the new Bengaluru site concentrating on developing custom internal tools rather than consumer-facing products like Facebook and Instagram.
Context of Global Layoffs
Earlier this month, Meta announced plans to reduce its global workforce by over 3,000 employees, accounting for nearly 5% of its total staff. These layoffs were primarily directed at employees who had received lower performance ratings.
Despite these reductions, Meta’s continued investments in India’s infrastructure and talent acquisition underscore the country’s strategic importance to the company’s growth and innovation objectives.
